  3. Pitblado and Lloyd Kaufman, 
  4. then at the Sperry Rand 
  5. Research Center, supports the 
  6. theory that the Poggendorff 
  7. illusion results from 
  8. displacement of angle contours. 
  9. They used a stereoscope to 
  10. present a rectangle against a 
  11. background of converging 
  12. lines, shown in the stereogram 
  13. at left. The rectangle appeared 
  14. in a vertical plane, separate 
  15. from the converging lines, 
  16. which appeared in another 
  17. plane even though the retinal 
  18. image still contained the 
  19. crossing of the rectangleΓÇÖs 
  20. vertical contours and the 
  21. converging line contours. 
  22. Observers saw a distorted 
  23. rectangle. The top edge looked 
  24. longer than the bottom edge, 
  25. presumably because the sides 
  26. appeared to slope outward, due 
  27. to overestimation of the angles 
  28. at the intersections of the 
  29. rectangleΓÇÖs sides with the 
  30. converging lines. Earlier, the 
  31. same investigators did a 
  32. variation of this experiment. 
  33. They found that the Ponzo 
  34. illusion disappeared with 
  35. stereo viewing, suggesting that 
  36. the original Ponzo effect, 
  37. unlike the intersecting-lines 
  38. variation, was the outcome 
  39. solely of inappropriate depth 
  40. processing.
